Why motivation is a load of BS!

And why it won't get you anywhere in shredding fat, losing weight and toning up this Summer!!
We've all seen it. The Summer season rolls in and everyone wants to lose weight, tone up and get in shape, right? It's around this time of year that all the infomercials, fitness gimmicks and fitness fads pop up about the latest exercise craze.
Our emotions are running sky high when it comes to health and fitness products and all we want to do is buy, buy, buy. Our motivation to exercise and get in shape is through the roof - We're bullet-proof, nothing can get in our way of achieving our goals of looking great right? WRONG.
It's happened to the best of us. We get excited and motivated to get in shape. We tell ourselves that NOTHING will stop us. No excuses this time. The first week, our alarm goes off and we jump out of bed rearing to go! The second week is a little slower because we've just realized that working out is quite hard; our muscles are sore and ache and we tell ourselves “I did so well last week, I deserve a little rest”.
Week 3 rolls in and that snooze button becomes so attractive. You start making those sneaky little excuses "Well, sleep's important too". Week 4 and suddenly you’re back to your old pattern. The motivation is gone, you've wasted a lot of money and your mental state is weakened because you've just failed…AGAIN. Sound familiar?
Here's my view - Motivation is a gimmick. “…. is just the motivation you need!” / “Just the motivation you’ve been looking for”. Motivation will only get you so far before it wears thin and you're back to where you started, if not worse. I see motivation junkies all the time. They remind me of roller-coasters. They'll be really motivated for a period of time and achieve amazing things, and then other times, they'll slacken right off and say "Oh I can't do that anymore, I don't have any motivation" and "I'm just not motivated to work out today, I'll go tomorrow".
They go up and down and up and down. They’re on the “Motivation Coaster”. If you spend you life on this coaster, sooner or later you will get motion sickness. It’s okay to occasionally have something like a special event, say a wedding coming up, to motivate you, just as long as you don’t waste your life away on the coaster. Get on the ride; reach that goal, but when you get off, STAY CONSISTANT. Don’t be one of the ones holding out for the next 'hit' - of motivation that is.
So if Motivation is crap - What do you do? It's simple - You keep your exercise consistent! You learn to exercise even when you're not motivated. People often believe I wake up in the morning going "Oh yeah, time to exercise!" - The reality is quite the opposite, just ask my partner - she sometimes kicks me out of bed…Literally. It drives her crazy! I don’t always exercise because I love it, I exercise because I know I must. Yes, I do enjoy it most of the time I am doing it, but like anyone, I have days where it is the LAST thing I want to be doing. However, if I am to be all that I can be, give all to the people I love and work efficiently and effectively on my business, then I have to exercise.
It’s not a question of whether or not I enjoy, say running up Queens Road or those last 10 push ups, it’s “I KNOW how much better I feel AFTER I have done it”. Not just physically, but emotionally too. If I have set myself a goal to wake up and exercise before work, and I do it, I feel GREAT. If I don’t do it, then not only do I have less energy throughout the day, I start my day off feeling disappointed in myself.
Some days I'm super motivated and I'll smash through a session loving it. Other's I'll just get through it, winging and whining. The key is - I do it! No matter how I feel, I just do it. I have learnt that consistency is definitely, without doubt, the ultimate key to success when it comes to exercise. Because as we all know, when you miss one session, it’s so damn easy to miss the next one, and then the next one and so on.
Of course, I love throwing different styles of exercise in there like swimming, cycling, rock climbing, BodyRip, Boot camps and Zumba so that my routine is varied and I'm always in a new and exciting environment. But my consistency never waivers. I take responsibility for my actions and don't make excuses. Sometimes it's as simple as putting my shoes on and going for a walk with the dog. Make it simple and stay consistent.
Your ACTION STEP is to complete one FULL week of exercise. Make sure to document it all. Just observe the excuses and mind games your brain starts playing. Schedule in 4 sessions and make them happen - no matter what! Then send me your results and let me know how you went. Send them to:

Ps - Exercising in the morning is great, because it gets the monkey off your back. Now you've got the whole day to do what you need to do. If you leave it until later on in the day, other area's of your life seem to pull you away.
