Training Outdoors Better than the Gym – College Research
The benefits to mental and physical well-being from taking exercise in the natural environment, as opposed to indoors are significant according to new research.
The study (Science Daily 5 Feb 2011) found that most trials showed an improvement in the mental well-being of participants: compared with exercising indoors, resulting in greater feelings of revitalisation, increased energy, positive engagement, together with decreases in tension and depression.
The studies also showed that people exercising outdoors were more likely to repeat and stay with their exercise regime.
Step into Life, Australia’s largest group outdoor personal training program have found similar results. Its average client sticks to the outdoor training routine for two years, on average; as opposed to three months for gym members.
Boasting some of the fitness industry’s longest client duration periods, they have found their members enjoy their exercise and are more likely to stay members longer, due to the group support and natural surroundings offered through their sessions.
“Many of our members work in office jobs sitting in front of the computer all day. Going to a session with Step into Life allows them the opportunity to get out into the fresh air, improve their mood levels and get a dose of vitamin D.” said Linda Schlencker Master Franchisee from Step into Life NSW.
“Step into Life has some of the industry’s longest client retention periods. This study confirms what we are experiencing with our members already. Exercising outdoors provides excellent benefits not only for your mood levels and health but for your ability to stick with an exercise program.” said Schlencker
“ Group outdoor personal training is an excellent way for people in the community to look after their health. It is affordable from around $16 per session and our sessions are fun, full of variety and provided in a social and non-intimidating environment” said Schlencker
