6 BEGINNER TIPS FOR RUNNING
Running is a great way to improve fitness and lose weight, however it can be hard work when you begin. Below I\'ll give you 6 tips to make it a little bit easier, so that you don\'t quit after the first session!!
- Don\'t go too fast - a common mistake is going too fast when you begin and then "blowing up" after only a couple of minutes. If you slow your pace down, to the point of feeling slow, you\'ll find you can go for alot longer without your lungs feeling like they\'re about to explode. It\'s also ok to walk. Remember the story about the tortoise and the hare???
- Find a running buddy - it\'s a lot harder to skip a session when you have someone relying on you turning up. And by having a bit of chat as you run it will ensure you don\'t go too fast. If you do try to go fast you won\'t be ABLE to talk.
- Enter a fun run - setting yourself a goal is the best way to stay on target. Enter a fun run that is atleast a month away. If you plan to enter a couple of days beforehand, it gives you an easy out and an excuse to skip training. And contrary to what you may think, you don\'t have to be an Olympic athlete to do a fun run! Plenty of people of all different ages, shapes and sizes take part, and lots of people walk!
- Don\'t increase your mileage too quickly - The general rule is not to increase the total kilometres you run each week by more than 10% a week. Even if you feel you can go further, increasing the mileage too quickly is the number one way to injure yourself. Be patient.
- Run on grass or trails - this is not essential, but it can be easier on the shins and legs to run on a surface that is softer than concrete or bitumen, particularly when you\'re new to it. Running on the grass next to the footpath is the best way so that you don\'t have to do boring laps around an oval. Just be careful if you\'re running when it\'s dark that you don\'t trip.
- Be Consistent - running 2-3 days a week is enough to get results. This doesn\'t mean, 5 sessions one week and none the next. Even if you\'re busy, getting out for a short run (or even walk) is better than no training at all. By training consistently, you\'ll get the best results.
Happy running, hopefully I\'ll see you out there sometime!
